Bhutan Centre for Media and Democracy (BCMD) was established in 2008. It is one of the first registered Civil Society Organisations in Bhutan. BCMD aims at nurturing democracy in Bhutan through civic engagement, public discourse, media literate citizens, and improving the standard of the existing media in the country. The centre works with a cross-section of society on issues that concern youth, citizenship, governance, media literacy, and education - using media as modus operandi to foster a culture of democracy. BCMD's objectives are: - The creation of a more active citizenry that will engage in the practices of democracy. - Offering public spaces for civic discourse and strengthening the voices of youth and citizens to enable them to participate in the development agenda. - The creation of resources for/on media and democracy to enlarge people’s understanding of the values and processes of democracy and the enhancement of BCMD’s staff that will contribute to strengthening civil society. - Strengthening the understanding of democracy and the role of journalism in a changing society.
